The Xalda Collection is a tribute to the native Asturian breed with celtic origins

It is a wool that comes from my little flock of sheep and from other breeders based in the area. The xalda sheep is an Asturian native breed with celtic origins which has been dressing Asturian people for centuries and was very seriously endangered twenty-five years ago. Nowadays its situation is much better but it still continues to be endangered.

It is a rustic and thick wool handmade spined as well as mechanical by a little spinning plant in Cuenca.

The wool has got hues from almost black to the dark brown and grey, depending on the sheep age, its wool changes its colour scheme, giving a wool with a very beautiful hues.

The Xalda sheep value

In the last years there has been a resurgence in the interest about the xalda sheep thanks to its value as a native breed and its importance in the cultural and natural heritage conservation.

This breed is characterized by its small size, a straight or subconcave cranium, outstanding eyes and thick dark brown wool mostly. It is very well adapted to the climatic conditions and pastures from the mountains, permitting them to survive and raise within an environment where other breeds could have difficulties.

The xalda sheep has been traditionally used for wool and meat production and has performed an important role in the Asturian rural economy. Nevertheless, in the last decades, it has been endangered because of the competition with other bigger breeds and rural depopulations.
