Bidul is a shawl made of merino wool and silk, handwoven on a loom and dyed with birch leaves gathered near my workshop. Its greenish and golden hues evoke the light filtering through the trees and the delicate sheen of the birch bark, that light and supple tree that has been a part of Asturian villages since ancient times.
The birch is a tree associated with clarity, the renewal of the forest, and the traditional knowledge that connected communities to their environment. This shawl pays homage to that perspective: to the humble and luminous tree that provides shade, medicine, lightweight wood, and also color for weaving.
The name Bidul is a Celtic toponym found in my municipality. It refers to a place with an abundance of birch trees and celebrates the connection between natural dye, the land, and the memory of traditional crafts.
Each piece is woven individually, so variations in tone are part of its unique character, like the grain of a living tree trunk.
