I give priority to the proximity of the textile fibres, harmless production processes, decent job conditions and animal welfare.

In my fabrics I only use 100% natural fibres, especially the wool because of cultural and environmental reasons, in addition to its excellent proprieties: the linen, with a very long production history in Asturias, just as is proved in the different place names that account for its historic importance; and the silk, one of the most delicate materials in the textile sector.

Whenever is possible I weave using proximity fibres from local projects and/or coming from organic production. And with the wool from my own xalda sheep flock, the native Asturian breed with celtic origins that was used for thousands of years in the magic territory of Asturias, today endangered.

The wool is a smooth and spongy fibre known by its capacity of keeping heat and regulate the body temperature. The linen is a strong and resistant fibre characterised by its capacity of absorbing humidity and keep the freshness. Moreover, the silk is a smooth and even fibre known by its smoothness and brightness, with proprieties that make it light and breathable.

Proximity wool

We think that we can reach a better quality wool without harming animals and reducing to the minimum the environmental impact without compromising the smoothness.

The best wool is the one that is done in the best way. The wool that offers a high feeling and emotion when you touch, smell, weave and use it, starts in the proper breeding of the sheep and, afterwards, with a careful selection of thread types.

ORGANIC CERTIFIED MERINO WOOL. Coming from ecological cattle breeding and sticking to the quality standards certified by GOTS, it guarantees to be mulesing and chemical products free. Moreover, it accomplishes the worker rights and laws and the environmental respect. It is a synonym of heat, smoothness and comfort, letting our skin breath.
CERTIFIED MERINA WOOL. It comes from certified merina sheep, processed by an ecological and extensive farming cooperative from Extremadura which contributes to keep the native merina livestock, take care of the landscape, encourage the local economy and the survival of a way of life that contributes to revitalise the rural area.
XALDA WOOL. It is a wool that comes from my little flock of sheep and from other breeders based in the area. The xalda sheep is an Asturian native breed with celtic origins which has been dressing Asturian people for centuries and was very seriously endangered twenty-five years ago. It is a rustic and thick wool handmade spined as well as mechanical by a little spinning plant in Cuenca.

Sustainable fibres

All wools by Paz Mesa are free from mulesing and superwash treatment.

We bet for working with organic fibres whenever it is possible, given that only this way we have totally guaranteed that our final product fulfil all the conditions that we consider as necessary for creating high quality textiles and in an ethical and solidary manner.

MULESING. This practice, which consists of lamb mutilation to avoid parasites it is not carried out in our country. It is permitted in Australia, the country from which the eighty-eight per cent of the whole world wool comes from. In Paz Mesa we are not supporting this practice, so our wool comes from sheep free from mulesing.
SUPERWASH. This industrial procedure uses highly poisonous chemicals, for human health as well as environmental. One of the wool characteristics is being biodegradable, but using this superwash treatment make it loses this condition. The wool which is processed with this chemical treatment gives a false smoothness feeling, that is not appropriate to the real conditions of the material.
